Viña Meín: winery renovation with Galician pine CLT structure in Leiro

MOL Architecture: sustainability and respect for the Galician environment
In 2022, the Viña Mein-Emilio Rojo winery, located in Leiro (Ourense), undertook a major renovation of its facilities. The winery, technical facilities, and offices were renovated, and work was also done on the exterior spaces. For this, they relied on MOL Arquitectura, a studio located in the provincial capital. Founded in 2002, it is made up of the architects Cecilia L. Muiños and Juanjo Otero, together with the technical architect Luis Ángel López.

His firm has a very clear focus: radical sustainability, the attachment to the Galician rural environment and absolute respect for the environment and local tradition. In fact, as we will see in this project, they are committed to using Galician wood in their projects.

A winery with a CLT structure made of Galician pine
The Viña Meín – Emilio Rojo renovation project is one of MOL Arquitectura's most iconic and award-winning works. In fact, it became the first winery with a CLT (cross-laminated timber) structure made of pine in Galicia. These panels are material from Xilonor, a company located in Coirós (A Coruña) owned by Finsa.

SuperPan® Tech in structure and enclosures
For structural applications and enclosures, MOL opted for materials from Finsa 's SuperPan® Tech range. In the structure, they used SuperPan® Tech P5 EZ, a structural board of technical class P5 composed of wood fibre faces and particle interior, suitable for humid environments. It features a smooth, compact surface that accepts direct painting or coatings and offers high mechanical resistance not conditioned by the direction of the board, which facilitates its installation. For the enclosures, they opted for SuperPan® Tech Vapourstop EZ, from the same P5 family, but airtight with a water vapour barrier for lightweight framing and also suitable for humid environments.

Savia Thermopine for facades, cladding and joinery
On the other hand, MOL Arquitectura used different materials from Savia, Finsa's solid wood brand, for applications such as cladding, facades, exterior paving, winery door joinery or interior joinery. Specifically, they are all Thermopine products, high-performance thermally treated pine wood.
