Hotel Moxy Barcelona: functional interior design and urban inspiration with Roble Aurora by Finsa

A strategic location with the Requena y Plaza seal
In 2024, coinciding with the tenth anniversary of Moxy Hotels, a Marriott International brand, the Hotel Moxy Barcelona was inaugurated, an accommodation with more than 400 rooms with an unbeatable location, next to the Sants station, which has a rooftop with a pool and incomparable views.

The project is a complete renovation of the building, designed by the Madrid-based studio Requena y Plaza, founded in 1987 by Juan Luis Requena and José Plaza, with extensive experience in architecture and hotel interior design. The studio was responsible for both the design and execution of the work, in both common areas and guest rooms.

Urban culture and Catalan art as visual identity In this case, following the style of the Moxy hotels, aimed at a young audience, they opted for an industrial aesthetic that reinterprets urban culture , with vibrant colours and fun and eye-catching decorative elements.

Furthermore, as it is a hotel located in the city of Barcelona, they integrated details that evoke internationally renowned artists such as the surrealist painters Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró or the modernist architect Antoni Gaudí, in addition to combining the traditional Catalan trencadís mosaics with the industrial-chic style typical of Moxy hotels.

Functional and welcoming rooms for a young audience
While the common areas stand out for their colourful and more informal style, in the bedrooms, Requena y Plaza opted for a functional and Compact design with a more neutral colour palette. A more cheerful touch is added through small decorative details such as colourful pool floats, cushions with fun sayings, and painted elements on the wall.

Integration of Finsa materials in furniture and panelling
It is precisely in these practical and welcoming bedrooms that Finsa materials make their presence felt. Specifically, they opted for a decorative surface from the Duo range, Roble Aurora in an Atlas finish, an oak design with a natural wood tone. Its elegant combination of cathedral grain, knots, and cracks makes this decorative surface an ideal choice for a functional hotel room of this style.

Its key features include an Antibacterial surface, two qualities especially useful in a hotel room with daily cleaning. FimaPan® Decor and SuperPan® Decor were combined as the baseboard.

Specifically, it was applied to furniture, such as the bed and bedside tables, and to wardrobes. It is also present in some areas of the common spaces through panelling and some decorative elements.
