Capitolo Riviera: the warmth of Thermopine wood in the renovation of an old hotel

Luxury boutique hotel on the Italian coast
Capitolo Riviera is an elegant 5-star boutique hotel located in the exclusive coastal district of Nervi, in Genoa (Italy), surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation. It is part of the prestigious Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) network, in partnership with Hilton. This accommodation arises from the rehabilitation of an old 1960s hotel with a brutalist aesthetic.

Parisotto + Formenton Architetti, the chosen ones for the project
The commission was handled by Parisotto + Formenton Architetti, a renowned Italian architecture and design studio founded in 1990 by architects Aldo Parisotto and Massimo Formenton, graduates of the famous IUAV University of Venice. They have offices in Padua and Milan, and their work stands out for its contemporary, minimalist aesthetic and strong focus on attention to detail. In addition to hospitality projects, commercial interior design and luxury retail, they carry out product design and art direction projects.

Balance between brutalist architecture and Mediterranean nature
For the construction of this hotel, Parisotto + Formenton took into careful consideration all the vegetation surrounding the establishment. Thus, they structured the project around that Mediterranean park and the interior design is intended to allow vegetation and natural light to penetrate the rooms.

The other pillar of the rehabilitation was to preserve the brutalist architectural features of the building, with exposed reinforced concrete structures. Instead of hiding them, the architects preserved and softened these lines by adding warm, natural materials such as wood or local stones.

Solar control and dynamism with Thermopine slats
The facade is where this coexistence between cement and heat-treated wood is best appreciated. Thus, the architects opted for enclosure systems with fixed panels of vertical slats CL W 50 and CL W 80, a Gradhermetic system with Thermopine from Savia, arranged randomly and with a variable separation across the width of the panels. These panels were installed on the terraces of the top two floors of the hotel and, through an intentionally asymmetrical rhythm, the facade gains dynamism, breaking the monotony to convey a feeling of lightness and movement.

Continuity in gardens and pool areas
Savia's Thermopine for the exterior decking of the hotel gardens and for the entire pool area. This choice not only reinforces the project's commitment to sustainability, but also achieves a smooth and harmonious transition between the building's architecture and the surrounding vegetation, as well as providing a warm surface for hotel guests.
