The proposed investment will allow the transformation of MDF (Medium Density) waste Fiberboard ) post-consumer (waste from products manufactured with MDF board at the end of their useful life) and pre-consumer (waste from the production process itself) in secondary raw material for the production of new MDF boards.
The main environmental benefits related to circularity that this project, currently underway at the Finsa Padrón plant, will achieve are:
• Reduction in the consumption of virgin raw materials, which will be replaced by secondary materials
• Improving the management of third-party waste through its treatment and reincorporation into the process as secondary material, contributing to the principle of waste hierarchy.
• Decarbonization of the industry: the energy consumption associated with drying fibre from MDF boards is much lower than that of fiber obtained from green virgin wood, with the consequent reduction in CO2 emissions associated with the generation of hot gases in boilers, necessary for the drying process.
• Additionally, it reduces emissions associated with conventional MDF production and provides a second use for the volume of MDF waste that would otherwise be incinerated.
The project “Reduction of the consumption of virgin raw materials through the use of recycled materials for the manufacture of MDF board ” is the beneficiary of the call for subsidies to promote the circular economy in the company for the year 2024 of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) within the framework of the Plan of
Recovery, Transformation and Resilience (PRTR), funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
