“THIS WAS OUR FIRST RETAIL INTERIOR DESIGN PROJECT, AS A RESULT OF WHICH WE HAVE STARTED WORKING WITH OTHER BRANDS THAT ARE MAKING THE LEAP FROM THE DIGITAL WORLD TO THE SHOP, AND TO THE PHYSICAL RETAIL SPACE.”
Ricardo Fernández, an architect at Estudio DIIR.

How can you combine the tradition, craftsmanship and youth of a business launched by a 23-year-old entrepreneur? The Diplomatic shoe shop, located in Madrid, went all in on oak in order to reflect its identity. The architecture studio DIIR designed this physical shop based on the premise that you can take advantage of a small space through lateral elevations, with oak wood construction for the running bench device and for storage.

What challenges did Estudio DIIR encounter in this, their first retail interior design project? Firstly, the speed with which the refurbishment needed to be carried out. “Retail projects always have very tight periods of time for development and execution,” says Ricardo Fernández, an architect. “Choosing suitable materials and making the right decisions is key,” he says.

In terms of choosing these materials, Fernández highlights the collaboration with FINSA, which was “essential, due to the variety of woods in their catalogue, their advice, and the ease with which samples could be sent”, he states. Fibranatur Rústico Oak was the chosen solution for the panelling and furniture. “It was an ideal choice to tie in with the values of tradition and craftsmanship,” concludes Fernández.

The second great challenge of the project was in relation to the execution of the elevation where the product was to be displayed. The shelves consist of continuous, thin steel sheets that are 3mm thick and 3.40 metres long. Their weight and length meant that one specific detail had to be considered in terms of execution: a substructure of metal profiles, hidden behind the Campaspero stone cladding, screwing the shelves in horizontally along their entire length, making it seem as if the sheets grew out of the joints in the stone itself. In this way, the neutral palette of steel and stone allows the colour, texture and shape of the shoes to be the main attraction.
